A Bigger Drive

On Sunday we decided to take another drive, but this time it was to go and see the Halona Blowhole. It's quite the ways away! It was over by Hawaii Kai, just past Hanauma Bay. It was a pleasant drive, and we all talked a lot on the way there. Donovan was just a chatterbox, having a big story to tell to Porter. It was pretty cute.

We got to the blowhole and got out of the car to go take a look. Oh boy was it windy!! Guess that's why they call it the windward side of the island, huh? Donovan did NOT like the wind! But Jocelyn was smiling through it!

We stood up against the railing and took a look. It was pretty neat! I forgot to get any pictures, though. :-(

On our way there, traffic was pretty bad headed back home, so we decided to continue up and around the island and then come back down Pali Highway. There was a little traffic for about 15 minutes, but after that it was smooth sailing. We saw some great beaches and scenery!

A little drive

This Saturday we didn't have a lot of time to do something. So we decided to take a short drive and see what we could see. What we did was drive down Kunia Rd all the way from Schofield Barracks to Ewa Beach. From end to end. It was fun. We stopped to get Icee's from 7-11 as well. They had a watermelon-lime that looked real good, but, sadly, it wasn't ready. Boo!

It was time for the boys to go to their martial arts class, so we headed over there. But things happened that made class not start for another hour. So we all went and played at the park across the street.

Short family day, but fun!

Reef walk

Today we took a trip our near Waianae to Ma'ili Beach and participated in a reef walk guided by the naturalists at the Living Art Marine Center. No one under the age of 4 was allowed, so I hired a babysitter to come with us and hang out at the beach with Jocelyn. We arrive at 9:45 and signed in. First we all gathered around a picnic bench and listened to a few rules and safety concerns. After that, we had a little discussion about the type of critter we might see out there, and how to treat them with kindness and respect. We could expect to see sea cucumbers, sea urchins, fish, and a variety of crabs. They handed out nets and we headed to the water.

What fun!!! Kyron and Porter took off and had a blast and Donovan stuck with me and held my hand through most of it. He loved having the net!

Mom, there's a sea urchin!!

Wow, I got something! Look, look!!!!

It was rocks. Haha! Donovan loved collecting rocks, sand, and flotsam.

We got a sea cucumber. So cool! It was squishy.

Porter and Kyron caught a bunch of sea snails, hermit crabs, and a fish!

It's hard to tell, but if you look closely to the left of the yellowish rock, and to the right of the edge of the large rock, there is a little black triangle. That was an eel!

None of the naturalists came to look at this, but we're assuming it was a sea cucumber of some kind.

The best laid plans...

We were full of all kinds of plans today. The Bishop's Museum, or the Dole Pineapple Plantation followed by shopping and then the beach in the evening. David wanted to get our rooms cleaned up first, so we got that done and then headed out. That's where things started to unravel. We stopped by ITR to pick up discounted tickets, but the line was super long. I waited, but then gave up. Next we went to the PX and returned some stuff and found David a swim suit and Donovan some new shoes. Next was the post office to mail off some packages. Without tickets to the Bishop's Museum, we decided to do Dole, but then it started raining. So no go on that. We then went to Costco and got David his membership card and walked around, enjoying the samples. It was here that a miracle occurred. We walked out of Costco spending less that $10. Wow!! Does that ever happen? Haha! Next up, Costco dogs for lunch, in Hawaii and we fed our family on less than $10. Whoo-hoo!

Since the outdoor activities were out, David decided to look up what movies were playing. Madagascar 3 was on and there was still a matinee showing. And THAT's the fun family day we had. Shopping and a movie. However, the kids were thrilled!! Thanks goodness, right?! We finished off the day with dinner at Chili's.

Oh well, maybe next time. We do have 3 years after all!

Swap Meet

What fun! The kids and I headed off to the swap meet this morning. We arrived around 10am. It's not the weekend, so it's not as crowded nor are there as many vendors. It wasn't what I remember it, though. I knew there would be vendors, but I thought I remembered there being a bunch of people "garage selling". Maybe? Maybe not. Either way, we had a good time. We went around the stadium twice. Only one layer of vendors, so we saw them all twice.

I got a new bathing suit, a skirtini to be exact, a big sunhat, and a toe ring. I'm very excited about the toe ring. When I went to Hawaii in 2002 to visit my Mom and Larry, they took me to get a toe ring. It became a thing. When one of her  daughters came to Hawaii, she would buy her one. I loved mine. But, I had to take it off once, and as such it ended up lost. So now that I'm back, I swore I'd find another one and replace it. I found the exact same one! Yay!! However, I went with the sterling silver instead of the gold. I like the color better. Hopefully my skin doesn't react to it. If it does, I'll have to go back for the gold one.

Donovan found a flip flop keychain that he wanted, so we got him that. Then we got a shaved ice to share. We found a curb to sit on to eat it while I nursed Jocelyn. Unfortunately, I parked the stroller over a storm grate, and when Donovan got out of the stroller, his keychain fell down the drain. Oops! I told him we'd replace it, but he decided to get an umbrella instead. That's what Porter picked as well, along with a back scratcher. Kyron found some things that he liked, but they were too much money. In the end, he chose a ukulele.

Father's Day is on Sunday, so we were looking for something for David. We picked out a Hawaiian tie, because he actually likes ties, but I wanted something more. I found a beautiful ukulele, and when he'd seen them before he expressed interest in getting one and learning how to play. So, while it was expensive, I went ahead and got it for him. When we got home, he reminded me that he already had a Father's Day present that he got before we moved here. Oops! Oh well, looks like he's getting more this year! Haha! (Good thing he doesn't know what my blog address is. Haha!)

Costco

That's right. You heard correctly. Our latest adventure was going to Costco! Our goal...get a membership again and a case of diapers. We usually cloth diaper, but while we're in the hotel using a friends machine or the coin machines, it's just too much of a hassle.

We found the Costco, it was within 15 minutes from here, so that was great. We went ahead with the Executive membership for the 2% cash back. I figured it wouldn't hurt to give it a try. Hopefully we can at least pay for the difference in membership prices at the end of the year, if not more.

Wow, so much fun! The items that are here are so different from other places. And I expected that, but it was fun to see. Not many Costcos would you find taro rolls, paddle boards, surf boards, lei's, so many varieties of macadamia nuts, etc.

There was a sample table up with Lindt truffles. LOVE those things! So of course we went to eat one. It was the variety pack, and I grabbed on that looked like the milk chocolate. But it wasn't that. It was PEANUT BUTTER!! Oh.my.gosh!!! It was amazing! I wouldn't buy the variety pack, but if I ever find a single bag, you better believe I'm buying it.

Another favorite? Macadamia Hershey Kisses! So very yummy!

I love Hawaii!!

Beach Day!

We were supposed to go to the beach last night. But it was really cloudy and windy. The boys were very disappointed, of course. So I decided that I should probably take them today. I was quite nervous being the only adult with 4 little ones, only one of which knew how to swim.

I saw a great DIY project last week that I really want to make. It's a coffee table made from a pallet. Then you put a glass/tile mosaic in between the boards. It looked really neat, and I thought it would be awesome if we did the mosaic with beach glass we found here in Hawaii. Link to where I found the table

So, off to the beach we went! They boys all wore their swim trunks, as I knew they'd end up getting wet. I talked to someone that I knew collected beach glass to get some advice on where to find some. So, not knowing what I was doing or going, off we went! I started heading towards Halaiwa, but ended up veering towards Waialua and over to Mokuleia. We found a beach parking lot and headed over. It wasn't a sandy beach, lots of rocks. But they were really cool tide pool rocks. That was fun! I looked down the beach and found a break between the rocks with a bunch of debris at the shore break. So we headed over there. I was so nervous that we wouldn't find anything! But, we did!! The boys were so excited. We ended out there for 2 hours. Such a fun morning!

And here is today's cache of beach glass, oh, and some shells that Porter collected as well.

Wahiawa Botanical Gardens

After church on Sunday, we stopped at the Wahiawa Botanical Gardens. It was so beautiful! The whole thing is paved, so we were able to take Jocelyn in the stroller. There was a self guided tour, so Kyron read a few of the descriptions for us.

This tree was amazing! It is a rainbow eucalyptus. Isn't it something?!

PCC...Take 2

We came prepared with a copy of our orders this time! We didn't get there until later in the day, but it was still enough time to see what we wanted to see. First stop...Samoa! We watched the show and the cooking demonstration. Then the boys and David took a stab at starting fire with two pieces of wood. David got a lot of smoke, and if he had some coconut fiber, I'm sure he would have got a good flame going. Next...fire knives! Of course, there was no fire, or knives. Rather it was giant q-tips! Not really, but as you can see, it's what they look like. Haha!

Across the lawn was the place to try to climb a tree. Porter was up first. The Samoan "helped" him up. It was scary for him, so he didn't stay there long.

Now it was Kyron's turn. He didn't get much higher than this, but he was doing it on his own.

Next, Dad! Nope, not much further that Kyron!!

After Samoa, we headed over to New Zealand. We learned the stick tossing game, and Kyron and I got pretty good at it! Porter kept getting hit in the head, so he quit. Poor guy! After that the boys got their arms tattooed and then learned another stick game. Donovan just decided to use the big stick to draw in the dirt.

Oh, the boys were excited! We were getting into a canoe. We parked the stroller and took Jocelyn with us as well. She and I were in the front, so I too a picture over my shoulder. Then I took one of me and Jocelyn up front.

I don't remember where we are here, but this is the spear throwing game. You're supposed to toss the spear up in the air and then have it land in a circle in the mud. After all the boys and Dad got a chance to try a few times, I decided to try it. Of course, I have no picture of that. And it's such a shame. Because I made a bullseye on my first attempt!!! No one else even got close. Go Me!!

Over in Hawaii, there was a place to attempt to fish. They each got three chances. Lookee here! Kyron caught a fish! The hooks were basically paper clips, so after we took the picture, the helper threw it back in the water. He was so proud of himself! Donovan was so sad, though. He so badly wanted to catch a fish, but they just kept eating his bait and swimming away.

After fishing, we searched for the village that had the poi to try. I was very excited to see how the kids would react. I still can picture in my mind how Ginger reacted when she was 3! Imagine my surprise when we found out they all liked it! Well, Porter didn't like it, but he didn't think it was disgusting. And Jocelyn?, she loved it!! And I didn't think it was bad, either. Not something I would eat really, but if it was served to me for some reason, I would eat it.

Through these pictures, have you noticed the funny thing Donovan is wearing? Initially, he was in the stroller, but wanted to participate, so he wouldn't stay there. I was wearing Jocelyn in a Mai Tei. So, they switched. We put Jocelyn in the stroller and I took the Mai Tei and tied it onto Donovan and turned it into a leash. David and I used to swear that we would never use one of those things. But it was a lifesaver! Haha! Oh well. I'm always telling my kids not to say never, guess I should take my own advice!

David decided that we needed to go to the luau, so that's what we did. We sat around waiting for a few minutes for it to open, and I took these pictures of the boys playing on some rocks. The luau was okay. Not the best. Because we had two unpaid guests (Donovan and Jocelyn), they weren't allowed to have an actual seat. Which means we had to be put in the very back where they had high chairs set up at the end of the tables. Our table was right in front of a post. Lame. So when they walked away, we got up and moved over one table. Haha! So, it was a bit better, and we could see the stage at least. However, it took a long time to be able to eat. So the kids were quite hungry by then. They had purple rolls on the table, made from taro, that we all loved. They were so yummy! The rest of the meal...eh. It was okay. I wasn't overly impressed. The show wasn't all that great either. I don't know if I was just expecting too much or what. However, it was an experience I wanted to have here for myself and the kids. So I'm glad we went. I think David and I might try another one by ourselves for a date night sometime.

We got a house!

We were told that it was really hard to get a 5 bedroom home over here. If we wanted a renovated one it was about a 6 month wait. A new one would take 12 months. We weren't sure what we were going to do, but it was in the realm of wait, pray, and hope, then accept a 4 bedroom if all else failed.

We had looked at all kinds of listings online, and with the BAH rate going down this year, there weren't any rental properties available in the size we needed. Plus, if we lived off post, that would mean we would have to buy another vehicle for David to get to work. That would increase our expenses....car payment, insurance, gasoline, plus utilities for the rental (which we were warned could cost around $400 per month).

We went to the housing office to sign in and get on the wait list. I asked the agent if there was a projection of when one would open up. He looked on his computer and found one that would be available in the middle of July. He said that if we wanted, he could reserve it for us! I said, "Heck yeah!" It is a renovated home, but it was one story! My prayers had been answered! What a blessing. Yes, we will have to live in the hotel for 8 weeks, but other than it being renovated instead of new, it was everything I had hoped we could have.

He gave us a copy of the floor plan and the address. As soon as we left we headed to the home. I was so disappointed. It looked awful! But I've gone back to look a few times. And each time it looks better and better. Nothing like the new ones, of course. Haha! However, I have to remind myself that they have been renovated inside, and that it is a huge blessing to get this home so quickly.

Polynesian Cultural Center...Take 1 & Motsumoto's Shaved Ice

The Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC) was offering an amazing deal. If you were a resident (or military here on orders) you could buy a season pass for 1/2 price during the month of May. So we went with our friends, the Walkers, to go and buy passes and go play for the afternoon. David wasn't too happy about going. It was a long drive, and it was going to cost a lot of money (not really though. It would be less than $100 for season passes for all of us). But he was a good sport, and went along with it.

But first....we must stop at Motsumoto's and get a shaved ice!! The line was long, but they certainly had a system in place for moving it along quickly. Oh my gosh, it was so yummy!!! I got mine with the beans in it. Never had it that way before, so I thought I'd try it this time. Yeah, not so much. Next time I'll just stick with ice cream on the bottom only, and get a small. The large is huge!

Okay, so back to the PCC. We get there, and the kids are really excited. We go up to buy tickets, and it's then that I remember that we have to have proof to show that we live in Hawaii. Duh! And did we have anything in the car? Nope! The Walker's had a copy of their orders in their car, but we had NOTHING. Aw, man!! No PCC today. :-(

We parted ways with the Walkers and headed home. But, David stopped at a beach on the way. And, being the smart Momma that I am, I had a bag in the back of the van with swim suits in it. So the boys changed in the back of the van and we went to play in the water for about 30 minutes. Yay for doing something fun today after all!

Week One

Wow, we're in Hawaii. We LIVE in Hawaii!!! Amazing! Such a great Mother's Day treat!!

We woke up quite early Sunday morning, as I suspected we would. Our hotel rooms each had a mini fridge and microwave, so we walked over to the commissary and bought some staples for hotel eating.

We decided not to try to find the church to go to, as we didn't have a car yet. However, a lady that I "met" on Facebook that goes to church offered to let us use her car. What a blessing! She dropped it off at the hotel around 4, and we decided to go take a drive around the island.

We went up through Haleiwa to the North Shore, past the Laie Temple, my old elementary school and house and past the PCC. On the route, David stopped the car at a little beach so that we could all get out and officially say we've been to the beach. As we got on the sand, we saw that there were sea turtles right in front of us. So cool!! I took some pictures. I thought I was taking a picture of Jocelyn getting her feet wet, but it turned out to be a video. So, there is a 3 second video of her not liking water. Ha!

We were approaching Kaneohe, and since we were driving on Kamehameha Hwy, I mentioned to David that we would be driving right past his Aunt's house. He said, "Too bad you don't have their phone numbers, or you could call and see if anyone's home." Little did he know that I had everyones phone numbers (thanks Mom!) LOL!!! Darn, he said. So I got on the phone and made some phone calls. We stopped off at his Aunt's house and we got to meet Traci and her kids.

David spent the week in processing to the post. So me and the kids were on our own. We decided we needed to find the ocean. We headed over to Ewa Beach. We didn't have swim suits, so we rolled up our pants and just put our feet in the water. Well, you know what that means! Yup, Kyron and Porter ended up all the way in the water. It was so much fun. After we were done, we sat down to try and then get all the sand off.

On Wednesday he headed down to Waikiki to pick up our van. Such a great relief to have our own vehicle. We got the loaner van back to our friend from church.

We Have Arrived!

We arrived at the St. Louis airport around 11am with 6 people (plus grandma and grandpa), 3 car seats, 1 bicycle,  13 bags, and 5 carry ons. Whew!!

After checking in and going through security - in which I was pulled aside for something suspicious in my backpack (which turned out to be a night light and a 8v battery beside each other) - we went to Chili's Too for lunch. Our flight was finally called and we were one of the last ones to board. Our seats were almost all the way in the back, and that was a challenge with all the kids and the car seats!

I got Donovan's seat installed then went to work on Jocelyn's. Then the flight attendant informed me that Donovan's seat needed to be against the window. Oops! I knew Jocelyn's needed to, but not his. So then I had to rush to move his. Then back to Jocelyn's. That was NOT easy! The buckle was just in the wrong place to install it. I finally got it, though. However, I was still working on it as the plane was pulling away from the gate! We got everyone buckled in before the plane took off at least! Haha! We were off!!!

The first leg of the flight was pretty uneventful. We arrived in LA where we had an hour layover. We purposely waited to be the last ones off the plane with all of our stuff. We hung out, lost Donovan for 10 minutes, and hung out some more. Because, well, our plane was having issues. First one of the flight attendant seats wasn't working so they had to fix that. Then they said the navigation system that lets the plan navigate over the ocean wasn't working, so they had to fix that! Thank goodness, huh? Finally, an hour after we were supposed to leave, we got to board. This time we were a little more prepared on what to expect, and waited for everyone else to board before us.

We got everyone into their seats a lot faster, but Jocelyn's seat would not install on the plane. With or without the car seat base! Even David couldn't get it in. The buckle was right in the belt path and no matter what we tried. So in the end we just put her seat in the seat unbuckled. She would be a lap child on this flight, and I would put her in her seat, unbuckled and swaddled, when she fell asleep. I admit it, being the car seat Nazi that I am, I shed a tear about it.

The kids did great on the flight. The in-flight movie was dumb, and the headphones sucked, but I had new books, activity books, toys and snacks in each kids carry on that they got to discover and play with. When it was time to eat dinner, they came around taking orders as it cost money on this airline. I ordered the pastrami sandwich, and the kids picked things like chips or cheese platters. Then the flight attendant did a very surprising thing. When he found out we were military, he comp'd our entire order and begged us to get more. So we ended up getting a ton of food, and he kept bringing us more. What a great guy!

Finally, 16 hours after our adventure began, we arrived at our hotel in Oahu. Yay!! It was about 3 in the morning for us, and we were exhausted.

Introduction

I'll be using this blog to write about our Adventures in Hawaii. We left Fort Leonard Wood, MO and were assigned to Hawaii. I just started this blog 3 weeks into our time here, so I will write a few posts a day at first to write the things we've already done.
